Supply path optimization (SPO) isn't a buzzword anymore — it's table stakes if you're spending serious money in programmatic.
The average DSP campaign touches 8-12 SSPs. Each hop adds latency, markup, and opportunity for inventory misrepresentation. When you audit your supply paths, you'll often find that 60-70% of your conversions come through 2-3 paths. The rest is noise with fees attached.
How to actually do SPO:
1. Pull a supply chain report from your DSP (most have this now under inventory analytics)
2. Tag each SSP path with your CPA or ROAS for the past 30 days
3. Identify paths where your CPM is 40%+ higher than the median but conversion rate is average or below
4. Reduce or eliminate those paths first
The tricky part is that some SSPs control exclusive inventory. Don't cut blindly — check if a high-cost path has unique placements you can't access elsewhere. But for commoditized display, ruthless SPO will cut waste by 15-25% without touching volume.
