Syndicating content internationally without the duplicate content mess
You publish an article, and a partner in another market republishes it in the same language. Both versions exist, both are indexed, and Google has to choose. Hreflang is often proposed as the solution here, and it is the wrong tool.
Hreflang is for translations and regional variants of your own content, where each version deserves to rank in its market. Syndication is a different situation: the same text on a different domain, targeting overlapping audiences.
What actually works for syndication:
— A cross-domain canonical from the partner copy to your original
— If the partner refuses canonical, a noindex on their copy is the next best option
— A visible link back to the source, which at least establishes attribution
When hreflang is right: your own site has en-US and en-GB versions with different spelling, currency and legal text. Same language, real regional intent, both should rank in their respective markets.
If you cannot articulate why each version should rank somewhere, you do not need hreflang, you need consolidation.
