Q: How long should my conversion validation window be?
Match it to your real refund and chargeback curve, not to a round number. Pull 90 days of orders and find the day by which 95% of refunds have already landed. That day is your floor.
Typical anchors:
— Digital with a 14-day refund policy: hold 30 days.
— Physical goods with returns: 45-60 days.
— Subscriptions or anything with a trial: hold until the first successful rebill clears.
Then publish it. The window itself matters less to good affiliates than knowing it won't move. A predictable 60 days beats a 'usually 30, sometimes longer' you change quietly.
Caveat: a long hold protects your margin but starves cash-flow-tight affiliates, and those are often your hungriest media buyers. If you stretch past 45 days, consider a faster track for partners with a clean history. Trust earned should buy faster money.
