Your breadcrumb is lying to Google
Client had URLs like /products/widget-x but breadcrumbs showed Home > Tools > Power Tools > Widget X.
Google reads breadcrumb structured data as the real hierarchy. Flat URL, deep breadcrumb. Mixed signals.
What I did:
— Made breadcrumb match the actual click path a user takes, not an imaginary catalog tree.
— If the URL is flat, the breadcrumb is flat. Don't invent 3 phantom levels to look "organized."
— Last crumb = current page, NOT linked, but still in the JSON-LD as a position.
Result: rich-result breadcrumbs stopped flickering in SERP.
Caveat: don't let your CMS auto-generate breadcrumbs from primary category if a product lives in five categories. Pick one canonical trail.
