Myth: DM every new member personally to build connection
A founder DM reads as a sales move to anyone who's been online before — and it doesn't scale past a few hundred members, so it quietly stops, creating a two-tier community of 'people the founder DMed' and everyone else. Inconsistent personal touch is worse than consistent systematic touch.
The correction — Public Welcome over Private DM:
☐ Welcome new members in a public channel where others see the warmth
☐ Tag one existing member to say hi (distributes the relationship)
☐ Use the welcome to point at a specific thread they'd find useful
☐ Reserve DMs for a real trigger (they hit a milestone, they went quiet)
☐ If you DM, DM everyone at that trigger — no favorites
Connection scales through public ritual, not private effort that runs out at member 300.
Save this for your next launch.
