The 1-hour CTR sprint that found free traffic

Month 12, my garden site had pages ranking #4-#7 that barely got clicked. The rankings were fine; the titles were boring. One hour of Search Console mining found traffic I already 'had.'

— Search Console, last 3 months, filter to position 3-10 AND impressions over 1,000 AND CTR under 3% (those numbers = ranking well, clicked poorly)
— I found 9 pages bleeding clicks. One had 14,000 impressions at 1.2% CTR
— Rewrite each title with a number, a year, or a bracketed angle: 'Best Raised Beds' became 'Best Raised Beds (I Tested 11 in My Backyard)'
— Add power qualifiers that match intent: 'Cheap', 'No-Dig', 'For Beginners'
— Rewrite the meta description to make a promise the title sets up
— Change ONLY titles this week so I can isolate the result

Three weeks later, average CTR on those 9 pages went 1.6% to 4.1%. Same rankings, traffic 8k to 12k. Zero new content.

The setback: one clickbait title ('You Won't Believe...') tanked — high CTR but the bounce told Google the promise was fake, and it slid two spots. Honest specificity beat hype.

The takeaway: You're probably ranking for more than you're clicking. Mine the position 3-10 / low-CTR pages and rewrite titles with real specifics — it's the cheapest traffic you'll ever find.
