The myth that spotting a trend means joining it
It was a hectic Monday when a snack brand's listening tool flagged a rising format — a meme template gaining 50,000 posts a day. The team's instinct, drilled by every guide, was to jump in before the window closed.
They published within hours. So did 200 other brands. Their post drowned, earning a 0.3% engagement rate against their usual 2%. The trend wasn't an opening; by the time it surfaced on a dashboard, it was already crowded.
The advice to 'monitor trends and move fast' assumes detection equals advantage. But a trend visible enough to trigger an alert is a trend everyone already sees. The brands that won that format had spotted the early signal — 200 posts, not 50,000 — a week earlier in niche communities.
The takeaway: by the time a trend trends, the edge is gone. Hunt the seedlings, not the forest fire.
