Making lastmod actually help crawling (it usually doesn't)

Sitemaps are a hint, and a poisoned one if you lie. Fix yours:

— Confirm lastmod reflects a REAL content change, not a template tweak or a nightly cron touch.
— If your CMS stamps today's date on every page every day, that's worse than no lastmod — Google learns to ignore it.
— Use full W3C datetime with timezone, not just a date.
— Remove noindex, redirected, and 404 URLs from the sitemap entirely.
— Split huge sitemaps so you can see in Search Console which segment indexes well.

Here's the thing: Google has openly said it distrusts lastmod from sites that fake it. Earn the trust and it becomes a real crawl signal.

An honest lastmod is a scheduling hint. A dishonest one is just noise you taught Google to discard.
