The myth: dynamically swap headlines and content per visitor and watch lift compound.
Why it spread: martech vendors sell personalization engines, and "relevance = conversion" sounds unarguable.
The boring truth: most personalization is shallow tokens ("Hi {City}!") that add creep without relevance, and shallow personalization can lower trust by signaling surveillance. Worse, it shreds your testing, every variant splits traffic thinner until nothing reaches significance and you're flying on vibes.
The nuance: personalization works when it changes the argument, not the cosmetics, matching message to traffic source or funnel stage (a retargeting visitor sees objection-handling; a cold one sees the basic pitch). One well-built page per real intent beats a hundred auto-swapped tokens. Personalize the pitch, not the pronoun.
