The free keyword stack that replaces a $99/mo tool (mostly)
I ran a month of research using only free tools to see how close it gets.
The stack I tested:
➕ Google Keyword Planner — real volume ranges, free with any Ads account, no spend needed
➕ Keyword Surfer (Chrome ext) — volume + CPC right in the SERP
➕ Answer Socrates / AlsoAsked free tier — pulls People Also Ask trees for intent
➖ No keyword difficulty score worth trusting anywhere free
➖ Planner buckets volume into ranges (100-1K) unless you're spending
What you actually lose vs paid: reliable difficulty scoring and historical SERP data. That's the $99 you're paying for.
Best for: solo site owners and one-off projects.
Price vs value: free beats $99 if you can eyeball difficulty from the SERP yourself (count weak vs strong results manually — it's a real skill).
Pick this if you do research a few times a month — the free stack holds. Skip if you need defensible difficulty numbers for a client — pay up.
Not affiliated with any of these.
