Tag and date archives are thin, near-duplicate lists. Indexed, they compete with your real content for the same queries, split your topical signals, and soak up crawl and equity. You built a competitor to yourself and pointed internal links at it.
Noindex, follow them: crawlers still pass through to discover and pass equity to the linked articles, but the thin page itself stops cannibalizing and stops hoarding rankings it'll never deserve.
The link plumbing survives. The dead weight in the index disappears.
How many indexed tag pages does your site have? <code>site:</code> search it — the number will hurt.
