Why most marketers map the customer journey wrong—and lose half their conversions

Why most marketers map the customer journey wrong—and lose half their conversions

The mistake is thinking CJM is a chart. It's not. A Customer Journey Map is a tool to find where people actually drop off, not where you think they should be.

Most teams build CJM from assumptions: "Users see an ad, click, land on a page, buy." Reality is messier. Someone sees your ad three times before clicking. They visit your site, leave, come back two weeks later. They read reviews on a competitor's site. They ask friends in a Telegram group. Then—maybe—they convert.

Map what actually happens:
— Track real user paths through analytics and session recordings, not what "should" happen
— Identify friction points: Where do people spend time? Where do they bounce?
— Note the emotional state at each stage: Awareness (skeptical), consideration (comparing), decision (ready or hesitant?)
— Find the moments of doubt—these are where you lose deals

The second mistake: treating all users the same. A repeat customer's journey looks nothing like a first-time buyer's. Segment by user type, traffic source, or product category. Map separately. What works for converting cold traffic won't work for warm traffic.

Once you have a real map, prioritize fixes by impact. A 2% improvement at the decision stage beats a 10% improvement at awareness if most drop-offs happen at checkout. Test changes there first.
