Myth: "Hit the content optimizer's word count and you'll rank"
Surfer and Clearscope both show a target length, and people treat it as a quota. I tested both on real briefs.
The target is a median of competitors, not a ranking factor.
Surfer SEO:
➕ Term-coverage suggestions are genuinely useful
➖ Its word-count target tempts you to pad, score goes up, quality goes down
Clearscope:
➕ Cleaner term list, less keyword-stuffy
➖ Same trap, content grade rewards length
Best for: making sure you covered subtopics competitors did, both are great. Using length as a goal, you'll write bloated junk that the optimizer 'scores' well.
Price-vs-value: Surfer ~$89/mo, Clearscope pricier. Worth it for the term coverage, not for the word-count number, which is the most misused metric in the tool.
Affiliate-neutral, I pay for both.
Pick these for topic coverage. Skip chasing the length target, cover the subtopics and stop.
