<b>"You have 3 seconds to hook them"</b>
The received wisdom: hook in 3 seconds or they scroll. Repeated because retention graphs show a cliff at the start.
Why it's wrong: that cliff is mostly people who'd never engage with your topic at all — wrong-audience bounce, not failed hooks. You can't hook someone the For You algo mis-served. Optimizing the first 3s for them trains weirder reach.
What's actually true: TikTok rewards the <i>average watch time of the right viewer</i>, not the survival rate of the wrong one. A slow, specific opener that filters out bad-fit viewers can beat a frantic universal hook.
Stop hooking everyone. Hook the one person you want to keep.
