Myth: growing the member count grows the community
Adding members to a community that hasn't found its core just dilutes signal and accelerates churn. New people arrive, feel nothing, and leave louder than they came. Growth before product-community fit is a leaky bucket you're paying to fill.
The correction — Retention Gate before growth:
☐ Measure week-4 retention of your last 100 joiners
☐ If under 40%, freeze acquisition — fix activation first
☐ Find the 'magic action' retained members took that churned ones didn't
☐ Engineer onboarding to force that action
☐ Only re-open growth once week-4 retention clears your gate
A bucket with holes loses more water the faster you pour. Plug retention, then scale. Member count is vanity until retention is real.
Save this for your next launch.
