<b>I reused my best-performing hook and it flopped — here's why</b>
My top Short ever opened with <i>"I got fired on a Tuesday and it was the best thing that happened to me."</i> 74% three-second retention, 1.1M views. So for the next video I reused the structure: <i>"I got dumped in March and it was the best thing that happened to me."</i>
It pulled 46%. Same skeleton, half the result.
Here's the thing — the first one worked because "fired on a Tuesday" was unexpectedly specific. The second leaned on the formula but lost the strange detail. "In March" is a date; "on a Tuesday" is a texture.
The fix: I rewrote it as <i>"I got dumped over a $6 coffee and it saved my year."</i> The result: retention back up to 70%.
The lesson: you can reuse a hook's structure, but not its specifics. The magic was never the template — it was the oddly precise detail. Copy the shape, replace the texture with a new strange fact every single time.
