Myth: Header bidding leveled the playing field for buyers

Myth: Header bidding leveled the playing field for buyers

The origin story casts header bidding — publishers running a parallel client-side auction across many SSPs before calling the ad server — as a buyer-friendly revolt against the ad server's preferential "first look." Open competition, fair access.

The mechanics created new buyer-side problems while solving the access one.

1. Header bidding did break the ad server's structural first-look advantage: now multiple SSPs bid simultaneously and the highest enters the ad-server auction. Access genuinely widened.

2. But the same impression now reaches your DSP through every SSP in the publisher's wrapper. You bid against yourself across paths unless your bidder dedupes and picks one route.

3. It also moved the auction into the user's browser (client-side), where latency, timeouts, and inconsistent signal mean some of your bids never resolve in time. Bids you'd have won are dropped on timeout, invisible in your win/loss logs as losses with no clearing price.

4. Server-side header bidding fixed latency but re-introduced an opaque middle layer with its own fees and cookie-match loss — partially recreating the gatekeeping it was meant to remove.

Why it matters: header bidding democratized access but multiplied duplicate paths and added timeout-driven blind spots. "Leveled the playing field" ignores that you now compete with yourself and lose bids to the clock.
