x-default is not "the English version". Stop using it that way
The x-default value tells Google which URL to show when none of your hreflang entries match the user's language or country. Many sites just point it to the English homepage and forget about it. That works only if English is genuinely the right fallback for everyone.
Patterns that actually make sense:
— A language selector page. The user lands, picks a region, and you get a clean signal about demand from unlisted markets.
— A geo-detected landing page that redirects by IP but stays crawlable. Careful: the page itself must return 200 to Googlebot, otherwise the fallback is dead.
— The global English version, if your product is truly global and English is the lingua franca of your audience.
Patterns that hurt:
— x-default pointing to a page that has its own hreflang language code. Now the same URL is both "English" and "everything else", and Google has to guess.
— Multiple x-default entries in one cluster. Only one is allowed.
One more thing: x-default should still be listed in every page of the cluster, including itself. Same reciprocity rule as everywhere else.
