In travel affiliate programs, the gap between click and payout is usually built into the product. A booking is not the same as a completed stay, and many programs only confirm revenue after the guest checks in, stays, or passes the cancellation window.

That delay protects the merchant from chargebacks, no-shows, and refunds. If a traveler cancels, changes dates, or gets a partial refund, the commission may be reduced or removed. For affiliates, that means “approved” can still be provisional until the stay is finished and the clawback period is over.

Track three separate timestamps: booking date, stay date, and payout date. If you only watch the booking date, your cash flow forecast will be wrong. For long trip windows, a deal that looks weak on paper can tie up capital for weeks or months before it settles.

Best practice: keep a payout calendar by partner, mark programs that pay on booking versus stay, and avoid scaling with money you need back quickly. In travel, the real KPI is not just EPC — it is how long your commission sits in limbo before it becomes spendable.
