Q: Surely more alerts means I'll never miss an outage, right?
A: The opposite, actually. This is the most expensive myth in monitoring. When everything pages you, nothing does. After the tenth false alarm at 3am, your brain starts treating every alert as probably noise, and that's exactly when you miss the real one.
Alert fatigue is a measurable risk, not a personality flaw. Studies of on-call teams show response times degrade sharply once alert volume crosses a few per shift.
Recommendation: alert only on user-facing symptoms (page down, checkout failing), route everything else to a dashboard or daily digest. Add confirmation thresholds so transient blips never page anyone.
Follow-up: yes, deleting noisy alerts feels risky, but a quiet pager you trust beats a loud one you ignore.
