Case #047: What the first 100 clicks were screaming
New offer, dating, mainstream traffic. $300 budget for the read. Most buyers stare at conversions on click 100. I learned to read everything else first — the conversion is the last clue, not the first.
My first-100-clicks audit, run the same way every time:
— Geo split: pull the click report by region. If 60% of spend went to one city I didn't target, the source is leaking junk. Found it here — one metro ate 41%, zero intent.
— Device fan-out: desktop vs mobile vs tablet. The offer was mobile-only; 18% of clicks were desktop. Pure waste, excluded immediately.
— Time-on-page from the prelander: under 8 seconds = they bounced before the hook. Mine sat at 6s. The headline was the problem, not the offer.
— Carrier/connection for mobile: WiFi clicks converting, cellular dead = a tracking or redirect break on cellular. Flagged.
— Repeat-IP rate: above 10% means bot or fraud sub-source. Mine was 14%. Blacklisted three placements.
After the audit I'd spent $300 and had two conversions — a 'failing' read. But I now knew the city to cut, the device to exclude, the headline to rewrite, the sources to blacklist. Relaunch with all four fixes: $1,920 spent, $3,150 back, 64% ROI by day 8.
The lesson: the first 100 clicks aren't a verdict on the offer — they're a confession from the traffic, if you know which line to read.
