Tools sell 'toxicity scores' and people disavow whatever lights up red. I ran Semrush's Backlink Audit on a clean real domain.

It flagged 140 'toxic' links. On manual review, ~110 were legit directories and forum mentions.

Semrush toxicity:
➕ Good at surfacing obvious link-farm patterns
➖ Over-flags low-DR-but-real sites as toxic

The correction: Google's John Mueller has said most sites never need a disavow file. Mass-disavowing tool-flagged links can remove links that were helping you.

Best for: cleaning up after a known negative-SEO attack or past paid-link scheme. Routine 'hygiene', skip entirely.

Price-vs-value: don't buy a tool for its toxicity score and then act on it blindly, that's how you self-inflict damage.
