Mid-2025 I ran the comparison directly. Reef site, two parallel efforts for one quarter:

— Track A: write 8 new posts ($140 cost)
— Track B: refresh 8 existing 18-month-old posts ($0 cost, just my time)

The refreshes weren't cosmetic. I re-checked every product link (4 were dead — losing sales silently), updated price ranges, added a new FAQ section pulled from GSC's 'queries this page already ranks for but doesn't answer', and refreshed the publish date legitimately because content materially changed.

Results after 10 weeks: the 8 new posts added ~$22/mo combined (young, still maturing). The 8 refreshed posts — which already had link equity and age — added ~$71/mo and moved faster because Google re-crawls established URLs eagerly.

The dead-link fix alone recovered real money I'd been leaking for months without knowing.

Lesson banked: an 18-month-old post with trapped equity responds to a refresh faster than a new post responds to existence. Mine GSC for queries your page ALREADY ranks for but barely answers — that gap is the highest-ROI content work on the site.
