Why it stuck: cutting fields is free and feels like progress.
The truth: field count is a proxy, not the cause. What actually moved that number was removing fields that triggered hesitation — phone number, company size, "how did you hear about us." Cutting a field nobody minds (like a second name field) does nothing.
What the advice skipped: sometimes adding a field raises quality and net revenue. Marketo-style teams add qualifying questions on purpose. Count friction, not fields.
