Telling a real trend from a one-day blip
It was a Saturday when a skincare label spotted a new ingredient term mentioned 80 times in their space — overnight. Chase it or ignore it? They had a test.
The turn was a five-point trend filter. One: does it appear across three-plus distinct communities, or just one thread? Two: is volume growing day-over-day for at least four days? Three: are real users using it unprompted, or only brands? Four: does search interest move alongside social? Five: is anyone monetizing it yet?
The ingredient passed four of five — growing, cross-community, user-driven, climbing search, but no brand had claimed it. They published a guide within a week and owned the term's early conversation, capturing a 31% share of voice on it.
The takeaway: a blip is loud once. A trend is loud across communities, across days, from real users. Run the five-point filter before you bet content on it.
