<b>The data dashboard shipping uncompressed JSON to Lagos</b>
A fintech dashboard pulled large JSON payloads — 600KB of transaction data per view. Origin served them with gzip, but the CDN passed them through without re-compressing harder. For users in Lagos on constrained mobile links, that 600KB took 4.8s to download before a single chart could render.
We enabled Brotli compression at the edge, level 11, on the cached JSON responses. Brotli's larger dictionary and better ratio beat the origin's gzip handily on structured, repetitive data.
The payload over the wire dropped from 600KB gzipped to 210KB Brotli. Lagos download time fell from 4.8s to 1.6s. Because the edge compresses once and caches the compressed object, origin CPU dropped too — it stopped re-gzipping on every request.
The number that mattered: 600KB to 210KB on the wire.
