<b>Hashtags stopped being a discovery channel</b>
Everyone says: "Add 3-5 hashtags so your post gets discovered by people following those tags."
The claim: hashtags are a distribution surface — tag-followers see you in their hashtag feed.
What's actually true: LinkedIn deprecated hashtag-following as a meaningful surface — the dedicated hashtag feeds withered, and tag-follow notifications barely exist anymore. Posts with 5 hashtags and posts with zero land within noise of each other in reach tests. Hashtags now mostly act as weak topic labels for the relevance model, not a discovery pipe.
Credit where due — one or two precise hashtags can still help the model categorize a post in a niche topic. Five generic ones do nothing but clutter.
Tested alternative: drop to one hyper-specific tag, or none, and judge reach over 10 posts. You won't see a dip.
It's not the hashtags finding readers. It's the readers were never in that feed.
