Chasing the 'see more' click is optimizing the wrong number

Everyone says: "Engineer a cliffhanger first line so people click 'see more' — it's a ranking signal."

The claim: the expand-click tells the algorithm your post is gripping, so bait it.

What's actually true: an expand without a follow-on action is a cheap signal at best, and curiosity-gap baiting trains your audience to distrust line one. People click "see more," find nothing, and learn to scroll past you. The durable signals are saves, profile clicks, and reply threads — actions that cost the reader something.

The trap: you can juice expand-rate and tank save-rate in the same post, and the second number is the one that compounds.

Tested alternative: write a first line that promises a specific payoff and deliver it in line two. Reward the click; don't bait it.

It's not the see-more. It's what they did after.
