"Open with a question" cost me 40% of my audience
The advice was gospel: start with a question, pull them in. So my hook was "Have you ever struggled to write a good hook?" Felt engaging. The data disagreed. 3s retention sat at 71%, and the comments were dead.
Here's what I missed: a yes/no question lets the viewer answer "no" and leave. I handed them an exit in line one.
I rewrote it as a statement that implied the question: "Most hooks fail in the first line, and it's the exact line you think is working." Same topic, zero question mark.
3s retention went to 83%. Average view duration climbed from 19s to 31s.
The lesson: questions invite a verdict, and "no" means leave. Make a claim that forces them to keep watching to argue with you.
