Case #048: The robot designer versus the human one
A SaaS offer, $2,400, and a real fork in 2026: pay a freelance designer $400 for a creative batch, or generate the whole set with AI tools for $40 in credits. I ran both batches as separate campaigns.
AI-generated set: 12 creatives in an afternoon, $40 in tokens. $1,200 spent, 1.9% CTR, $1,380 back, 15% up. Volume was the superpower — I tested twelve angles for the price of lunch. But the winning AI creative plateaued fast; the audience pattern-matched the "AI look" and CTR decayed 30% in week two.
Human freelancer set: 4 creatives, $400, three-day turnaround. $1,200 spent, 2.6% CTR, $1,710 back, 42% up. Fewer shots, but the winner had a hand-drawn quirk and a culturally specific joke the AI couldn't conceive. It didn't fatigue — held CTR for the full two weeks.
The insight that paid: I used AI to test twelve angles cheaply, found the one direction that worked, then paid the human $150 to execute only that direction well. Hybrid campaign: $900 fresh spend, $1,590 back, 76% up.
The split: AI wins on volume and speed of ideation, humans win on the un-templated detail that resists fatigue. Used alone, each leaves money on the table.
The lesson: let the robot generate the breadth and the human craft the depth — AI finds which door to open, a person makes the room worth staying in.
