Affiliate links in newsletters: disclose clearly without turning every CTA into a legal warning
Readers need context, not a disclaimer wall. Place a short disclosure before the first affiliate recommendation, not only in a footer or policy page. Use plain language: “Some links are affiliate links, so we may earn a commission if you buy—at no extra cost to you.”
Use a simple placement checklist:
— Put the disclosure near the first relevant link.
— Repeat it when a section can be forwarded or read on its own.
— Make it noticeable, but less prominent than the main content.
— Cover links, discount codes, and product buttons.
Keep the recommendation useful. Explain why the product is relevant, label the CTA accurately, and avoid implying that clicking supports an opinion unless that is true. Check the email on mobile: the disclosure should appear before the link, not after a long scroll.
A short, timely disclosure protects trust without interrupting the newsletter. Review every template and automated sequence, then check the rendered version before sending.
