Dedicated DNS monitoring vs. relying on your HTTP check — do you need a separate one?

Q: If DNS breaks, my HTTP check fails anyway. Why monitor DNS separately?

A: Because the HTTP failure tells you something's wrong but not what, and DNS problems are uniquely slow and scary to fix. A dedicated DNS check queries your records directly and tells you exactly which part broke — your domain didn't renew, your nameserver is down, a record was changed, or your DNSSEC chain is invalid.

Without it, you waste the first painful minutes of an outage poking at your server while the real problem is upstream at the registrar or DNS provider.

A good DNS monitor also catches things HTTP never sees: an unexpected change to your records (possible hijack), or a registrar expiry warning weeks ahead. Query an external resolver, not just your own provider's — they can disagree, and your users are hitting the external ones. HTTP tells you it's down; DNS monitoring tells you to go yell at the registrar.
