Program closed? Move links fast before traffic value leaks away
When an affiliate program shuts down, the real loss is not only the commission stream. Old links can keep sending clicks, but every extra hop, broken redirect, or dead landing page erodes trust and kills conversion intent.
Use a simple rescue order:
— Replace links on your top pages first: homepage modules, money pages, email templates, and ad bios.
— Map the old destination to the closest live alternative, not just the nearest merchant with the same niche.
— Keep the same content angle if possible; changing the offer and the page promise at once usually drops CTR.
If you control redirects, send users to a page that matches the original intent. A generic partner homepage is often worse than a category page, a comparison page, or a pre-filtered search result. For search traffic, preserve the headline, internal links, and surrounding copy so the page still answers the query.
Track every replacement: old URL, new URL, placement, and update status. That gives you a rollback path if a substitute starts underperforming. Speed matters, but relevance matters more — a quick swap that keeps the same user intent usually protects more value than a perfect link that arrives late.
