Fixed-size slots vs fluid/responsive ad slots (the CLS angle)

Fixed-size slots vs fluid/responsive ad slots (the CLS angle)

What it does — both fill space; the difference is how they handle layout shift. Fixed reserves exact pixels; fluid/responsive lets the ad pick a size at request time.

Setup effort (1-5) — Fixed with reserved min-height: 2. Fluid: 1, but CLS-safe fluid: 3 (you must reserve a max-height container).

RPM lift seen — Fluid: +6-12% fill because more demand qualifies per slot. Fixed: lower fill but zero shift.

Pros / Cons —
Fluid: more eligible demand, better mobile fit, but unreserved height tanks CLS and that bleeds into rankings + bounce.
Fixed: rock-solid layout, but you leave fill on the table when the ideal creative size differs.

Verdict — Use fluid, but always wrap it in a min-height container sized to your most common creative. You get fluid's fill with fixed's stability. Never ship unreserved fluid above the fold.

Lift: ★★★☆☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: responsive templates. Skip pure fixed unless you're chasing a perfect CLS score for a known thin-content penalty.
