Building a newsletter vs chasing more SEO traffic
Month 1: My budgeting-tools site ran 100% on Google. 40k sessions, all rented from the algorithm. I poured everything into more content, more rankings.
The turn: the December core update clipped me 35% overnight. 40k → 26k. One Tuesday, a third of my income gone, nothing I did wrong on-page. Total dependence on one channel is a loaded gun.
Month 4: I'd ignored email as "old." Big mistake. I added a content upgrade (a free spreadsheet) and started collecting addresses. Slow — 200/month at first.
Month 9: 4,100 subscribers. When the NEXT update hit, my newsletter sent 6k clicks that week to my best affiliate pages — traffic I owned, immune to the algorithm. Email converted at 4x my SEO traffic because those people trusted me.
The takeaway: more SEO traffic is more eggs in a basket Google controls. A newsletter is slower and less sexy, but it's the only audience you own outright. After one update wipes a third of your traffic, you stop seeing email as optional. Build the lifeboat before you need it.
