Settling the above-the-fold debate with your own data
"Above the fold matters most." [DEPENDS] It doesn't, universally, and here's how to find out for your page. The myth spread from eye-tracking studies done on news sites, then applied to everything. Get your own answer:
— Pull scroll data: what percentage actually scroll past the fold? On engaged traffic it's usually most of them.
— Overlay click maps: are conversions firing from above or below the line?
— Segment by source: paid cold traffic behaves nothing like returning visitors.
— Run one test moving a key element below the fold. If conversions hold, the fold was never the constraint.
The nuance everyone screaming about the fold ignores: it matters for visitors who won't scroll, and that's a shrinking minority for most niches. The fold isn't a wall; it's a line on a continuum of attention. Measure where your attention actually lives before you worship a line from 2005.
