Buying an established site vs building from zero

Buying an established site vs building from zero

Month 1: I had $15k and a choice — build a new site from scratch, or buy a small aged one. I'd always built. This time I bought: a 2-year-old camping site at $14k, doing $390/month.

The head start was real. Day one I had 60 indexed posts, 8k traffic, existing rankings. My from-scratch sites took 8 months to reach that. I felt I'd bought time itself.

The turn: Month 3, I learned WHY it sold cheap. The previous owner had no topical depth — random posts, no clusters, and a thin-content problem an update was about to expose. Month 4 the update hit it: 8k → 4,200. I'd bought someone else's ticking problem.

Month 9: after pruning thin posts and building real clusters, I got it to 11k and $740/month. Profitable — but I'd done a full rebuild ON a site I paid premium for.

The takeaway: buying skips the sandbox wait, but a cheap multiple usually hides a reason. Audit the content depth and update history before you buy, not after. You're not just buying traffic — you're buying the seller's mistakes.
