Program closure playbook: move links fast without burning traffic value
When an affiliate program shuts down, the first loss is often not commissions — it’s momentum. Old links keep ranking, emails keep sending, and ads keep spending, but users hit dead ends. That creates bad clicks, weaker trust, and wasted placements.
Do this in order:
— Replace top-converting links first: homepage, money pages, email templates, paid ads, and pinned posts.
— Keep the same intent match. If the offer is gone, send traffic to the closest alternative, not a random merchant.
— Update anchors, CTAs, and creatives together so the destination and promise still line up.
Before you swap everything, map where each link lives. A redirect on the page is not enough if the link is inside a newsletter archive, a PDF, a video description, or a partner widget. Those assets keep leaking traffic long after the main site is fixed. 🔎
Save a simple fallback list for every offer: one primary replacement, one secondary replacement, and one internal page for traffic you cannot monetize immediately. The faster you route by intent, the less value you lose from old content.
The rule is simple: treat closure like a link migration, not a cleanup job. Faster replacement, tighter match, and fewer dead clicks.
