Reducing your URL count is usually the wrong crawl-budget fix
Myth: too many URLs is the crawl problem, so prune the site.
Reality: Google's docs frame crawl budget as crawl-rate limit times crawl demand. The rate limit is driven by how fast and stable your server is. The demand is driven by how popular and fresh your URLs are. Raw count is a symptom, not the lever.
Here's the thing. A 2-million-URL site on fast infrastructure crawls fine. A 50,000-URL site on a slow host, throwing intermittent 500s, gets throttled hard. Same Google, opposite outcome.
The tradeoff: pruning helps when the excess is genuine junk diluting demand. Fixing server response time helps the rate limit directly and instantly, no content decisions needed.
Before you delete pages, look at your time-to-first-byte. The throttle is often in your stack, not your sitemap.
