Your 20k followers are not your reach
Everyone says: "Grow followers — bigger audience, bigger reach."
The claim: follower count is a distribution multiplier you bank and draw on forever.
What's actually true: LinkedIn shows your post to a small seed of your followers first, then expands ONLY if that seed engages. A bloated follower list full of people who followed for one viral post and never engage again drags your seed-engagement rate down — so a 20k account with 0.5% engagement can out-reach... nobody, including its past self at 3k.
The metric that actually predicts reach is engaged-followers, not total. Buying or viral-spiking your count inflates the denominator and starves the numerator.
Tested alternative: track engagement-per-follower monthly. If it's falling as count rises, you're collecting ghosts.
It's not how many follow you. It's how many still care.
