301-ing an old post is lazy — relinking is the sharper tool
Unpopular opinion: when a page underperforms, people 301 it into a stronger one and call it consolidation. Sometimes right. But a 301 throws away a live, indexed URL that could pass equity TO the strong page via a contextual link instead. Redirect when the content truly merges; relink when the weak page still serves a query and can feed the winner.
The redirect is permanent and lossy. The internal link is reversible and additive. Reach for the link first.
