Q: A simple domain change vs a full rebrand with new URLs — do I treat them the same?
Great to separate these, because people lump them together and then wonder why recovery is slow.
Short answer: a pure domain swap is low-risk and recovers fast; a domain change plus URL restructure is two migrations at once — much riskier.
Long answer:
If only the domain changes (old.com/page to new.com/page, same paths), it's the cleanest migration there is: simple 1:1 redirects, Change of Address tool, done. Google handles these well and recovery is usually quick.
Stack a URL restructure on top (new domain and new slugs and new hierarchy) and you've multiplied the failure points — every page needs an individually mapped redirect, and you can't isolate which change caused a drop.
The tactic: if you can, change the domain first, let it settle, then restructure URLs as a separate project.
Next step: if both are planned, split them into two dated phases rather than shipping one giant change.
