Reading 'Crawled - currently not indexed' correctly
This GSC status panics people. It's a quality verdict dressed as a bug.
What it actually means: Googlebot fetched the page, then chose not to index it. Crawl worked. Selection failed.
How I triage it in the Pages report:
— Sort by date; recent + climbing = often just queue lag, wait 1-2 weeks
— Old + stuck = thin, duplicate, or low-value. No amount of resubmitting fixes it
— Check Inspection's 'googleCanonical' — if it points elsewhere, it's a dedupe, not a snub
Where the report falls short:
— It buckets very different problems under one label
— Sampled URL list, not exhaustive — export via API for the full set
Pros: tells you crawl isn't your bottleneck.
Cons: zero guidance on the real cause.
Best for: confirming you have a content problem, not a technical one.
Not a status to 'request index' your way out of.
