A playbook for running a community event that lifts more than the event

A playbook for running a community event that lifts more than the event

Most community events spike activity for a day and change nothing. The goal is durable lift — members who stay active after. Here's how to structure one to measure and maximize that.

Step 1: set the real success metric
Not attendance. Measure: of attendees, how many were active 14 days later vs a matched non-attendee baseline. Spike-and-collapse is the default failure.

Step 2: design for first-timers
Events disproportionately re-activate already-active members (preaching to the choir). Build a low-barrier on-ramp so lurkers and quiet members can participate without performing.

Step 3: capture the surge
During the spike, route new energy somewhere persistent — a project channel, an ongoing thread — so engagement has somewhere to go when the event ends. Energy with no aftermath dissipates.

Step 4: follow up once
A single post-event recap that references what people made. One touch, not a campaign.

What the evidence suggests
Events reliably produce short spikes; durable lift is rare and concentrated among first-time participants, which is why on-ramps matter more than headline guests.

The caveat
The matched-baseline comparison is imperfect — attendees self-select as more engaged, so some 'lift' is selection, not causation.

Open question: are events worth running for the spike alone, given that perceived liveliness might recruit lurkers even if the cohort effect is null?
