Reality: Googlers including John Mueller have said for years that for sites without a manual action, disavowing usually changes nothing. Case studies showing "recovery after disavow" almost always coincide with a core update, a content overhaul, or technical fixes shipped the same month.

Actually, attribution is the trick here. Something else moved, and disavow took the credit because it was the visible action.
