Mapping a real B2B buyer journey: a 6-step checklist
The question: before you assign attribution credit, do you even know the actual sequence of touches a buyer goes through?
B2B journeys are non-linear and mostly invisible — Gartner research describes buyers 'looping' through stages, not marching down a funnel. Map the real path before modeling credit for it.
The mapping checklist:
— Interview 10 recent closed-won buyers about their actual path, in their words.
— Plot every touch they recall, including offline ones analytics never saw.
— Mark which touches were anonymous (pre-form) versus known.
— Identify the buying committee — B2B decisions average 6-10 stakeholders, each with their own path.
— Find the recurring 'first real conversation' trigger across interviews.
— Note where dark social entered (a forwarded link, a Slack mention).
Limitations: ten interviews is a small, recall-biased sample — buyers reconstruct journeys with hindsight and forget early anonymous touches. Closed-won only ignores the deals you lost. Treat the map as a hypothesis.
What it means for B2B: most attribution models are built on a journey the team has never actually mapped, so they encode guesses as data.
Bottom line: map the path from real buyers before you trust any model that claims to score it.
