The customers who told us exactly what to build
A growing marketplace had a search box almost nobody on the team ever looked at the data behind. Traffic was climbing; conversion wasn't.
The clue was a site-search report sorted by zero-result queries. One term, a specific product category, appeared 1,900 times a month and returned nothing. Users searched, found emptiness, and bounced at 88%.
They didn't build new inventory overnight. They created a single landing page for that category with the three closest existing products and a 'notify me' form.
Bounce on those searches fell from 88% to 41%, and the page became the second-highest email-capture source on the site in a month.
The lesson: internal search with zero results is a list of demand you're refusing. Sort by it monthly; it's the cheapest research you own.
