Ch. 4: The September Update Took 58%
September 2023 core update. I watched my drone site go from 540 daily sessions to 226 over nine days. 58% gone. Revenue fell from $260/mo to about $112.
My first instinct was to torch and rewrite everything. I'm glad I didn't. I spent a week in GSC instead, segmenting losers from survivors.
The pattern was brutal but clear: every page that DROPPED was a 'best X' comparison post — thin, affiliate-link-heavy, no hands-on proof. Every page that HELD or GREW was a specific repair walkthrough with my own photos of a disassembled gimbal. Google hadn't punished the site. It had punished the parasitic half.
The update wasn't an attack. It was an X-ray showing exactly which content I'd faked expertise on.
I deleted 22 comparison posts outright rather than 'improving' them. Revenue stabilized at $140 by November and the survivors actually rose.
Lesson banked: read a core update as a diagnosis, not a verdict. Sort winners vs losers BEFORE touching anything — the survivors tell you what the site is allowed to be.
