The received wisdom says front-load everything because attention dies at second three. Everyone believes it because creator gurus repeated a stat about "average attention spans" that was never about video at all.
Here's the problem: TikTok's ranking signal isn't second-3 retention, it's the full retention curve plus rewatches. A video that dips early but climbs (a payoff at second 8) often beats a flat front-loaded one, because the climb signals the algorithm to keep pushing.
The mechanism rewards shape, not a single frame.
Reframe: stop optimizing one second, optimize the slope of the whole curve.
