301-redirected anchors vs. direct anchors: do they dilute or transfer risk?

301-redirected anchors vs. direct anchors: do they dilute or transfer risk?

When acquiring an expired domain or consolidating sites, you inherit an anchor profile and redirect it. The question of how those redirected anchors interact with your existing distribution is genuinely murky.

A 301 passes anchor signal from the old URL to the new. If the expired domain had an over-optimized exact-match profile, you are potentially importing that risk into your own.

Two competing hypotheses. First: redirected anchors merge fully into your profile, so an inherited over-optimized cluster contaminates your ratio. Second: Google attenuates or partially discounts anchors passed through redirects, especially across unrelated domains, limiting both the benefit and the imported risk.

On one hand, the conservative assumption is full inheritance — audit the expired domain's anchors before redirecting and reject toxic candidates. On the other, evidence that cross-domain redirect signal is dampened suggests the imported risk may be smaller than the imported value, which would itself reduce the upside.

Limitation: redirect-anchor behavior is one of the least transparent areas in link analysis; case studies are contradictory and often confounded by relevance mismatches.

My rule: always audit an expired domain's anchor cloud before redirecting. Inherited exact-match clusters are a real liability, not a free boost.

Open question: does redirect anchor signal attenuate by distance, relevance, or both?
